Last week I wrote about deciding how you want your business to be perceived. Your business traits help tell your story.
It seems almost as soon as I posted it, I was blasted with ads on my social media with these promises –
$10K months in three easy steps!
6-Figure no-fuss map for your coaching business!
No ads, no calls, no social media approach to a 7-figure business!
Now don’t get me wrong. There are some very successful people out there that have used these kinds of tips and techniques to have a successful business. And that is wonderful.
Heck, I’ve taken a few of these courses and learned some handy things. I’m a more pragmatic and practical person and tend to be skeptical of these types of promises. And I am certainly not comfortable making these claims. But I do like to learn, so I’ll check out their systems. I found that they don’t really work for me.
We all have different businesses that require various techniques to build success. What works for a candle business may not work for a virtual assistant or an online editor. But what they all have in common is that they need dedication and work.
So here is my take on what you need when starting a business or nonprofit:
- A Vision – start with a pretty solid idea of what you want to do or accomplish and work that idea over until it reflects what you are willing to do for a long time.
- Support – this might be family, friends, or an online or in-person community of like-minded people. Find someone who will listen to you talk about your idea and experiences. And really listen to their feedback.
- Time – how much time depends on what you are doing. Is this a side hustle? Can you only do this at night? What are your time priorities, and how will you make them work for your business? No one can work 24/7, so make time for yourself and your family.
Start there! That is only the beginning of your journey! You can do it! Everything else you need for success will follow when you put in the work. In fact, I’ve built my business to help new (and existing) business owners and nonprofit leaders do just that!
I love the details, the projects, and ensuring everything is in order to use every advantage I can find for a client.

Here’s what you’ll get from my business:
- Straightforward, concise assistance in your projects
- Honest communication
- A partner in making your business or nonprofit the best it can be
- A consultant ready to get down to the nitty-gritty of business
- Someone who likes the details and authentic conversations
- Someone who will challenge you to be better, to learn more, and test your comfort zone
What you won’t get:
- No fancy promises of large amounts of revenue in a short period
- No vague guidelines on what to do for yourself that don’t help you step by step
- No one-size fits all solutions
- Someone solely focused on “likes” or “shares” on social media
As someone told me recently
You are already everything you need!
Someone might say, “Selina, why would you write this in a blog post?” Because this is me testing my comfort zone. I won’t ever get to talk to everyone I connect with online. I love hearing others’ stories and sharing my own. But time is limited, so I am learning to blog. Here, I can share my story with you!
Do you have experiences to share about these types of courses and claims? Leave your story in the comments.
