Word of the Year 2025

2024 Recap: Finding Strength in Resilience

For many years now, I’ve chosen a “word of the year” to guide my decisions, changes, and new opportunities. Past words have included Integrity, Accountability, Grow, Positivity, and Flexible. In 2024, my word was Resilience—and it proved to be exactly what I needed.

I chose Resilience after navigating through a challenging 2023. The profound changes in my business and the deep personal loss of my husband meant I needed resilience more than ever to manage life, change, and grief. While this journey continues, I’ve learned that each word I choose builds upon the previous ones, creating a foundation of personal growth and strength. The lessons learned, new paths taken, and personal growth I’ve experienced are all intentionally woven together through these chosen words.

Why Words Instead of Resolutions?

I don’t make traditional New Year’s resolutions. [You can read more about why I do this here]. Instead, my chosen word helps shape my intentions for the year, guiding both my personal and professional goals. This approach has proven more sustainable and meaningful in my journey.

Looking Ahead: 2025 Word of the Year – Renew

For 2025, I’ve chosen the word “Renew.” This word resonates deeply with the significant personal and professional plans I have in motion. Here’s what renewal looks like for me in the coming year:

Professional Growth

  • Expanding my work as a board member at the local chamber, with a focus on improving outreach to Hispanic business owners
  • Increasing my available hours as an SBDC advisor to support more entrepreneurs
  • Launching my exciting new course for nonprofit leaders – “Passion to Impact”
  • Strengthening my business presence through enhanced newsletter reach and social media engagement

Personal Renewal

  • Focusing on major health goals
  • Completing home improvements to reclaim my upstairs space (lots of painting and cleaning!)
  • Creating a new garden to carry on my husband’s love of plants
  • Returning to beloved hobbies: fiber crafting and reading, which took a backseat this past year

Making It Real

During the holiday season, I’m taking time to thoughtfully plan these intentions. My process includes:

  • Recording goals and tentative deadlines in my paper planner
  • Creating a visual reminder—a special image featuring “Renew”—to display on my wall
  • Setting up regular check-ins with myself to stay aligned with my word

Reflecting on Growth

Looking back at 2024, Resilience wasn’t just a word—it was a journey that taught me valuable lessons about strength, adaptation, and moving forward. As I transition to Renew in 2025, I’m carrying these lessons with me, ready to build upon them in new ways.
